Monte Brè Funicular: The Countdown to the new carriages has begun!
A Bridge Between History and the Future
The Cassarate-Monte Brè Funicular is marking another milestone in its over 100-year history. Following the 115th anniversary celebration in 2023, which paid tribute to the stations that made it an icon, it’s now time to look ahead. Starting January 2025, the current carriages, which have been in service for nearly 40 years, will be replaced with a new generation of modern vehicles.
January 13–15: The New Carriages Take Center Stage
Between January 13 and 15, the new carriages were installed using a crane in a spectacular operation — an unmissable event for technology enthusiasts and the curious alike. During this phase, the carriages on the Suvigliana-Monte Brè route will be replaced with new panoramic models.
February 15: Season Opening
On February 15, the Monte Brè Funicular will officially inaugurate the new carriages with a ceremony in Suvigliana. Afterward, the new vehicles will be available for their first public rides, offering a fully renewed experience.
Partners and Collaborations
The production of the new carriages began last August with CWA Constructions SA in Olten, the winner of the tender. The project is the result of collaboration between leading companies in the field, including Garaventa AG, responsible for the construction of the chassis and project management, and Sisag AG, which handled the electrical and electromechanical control systems for the funicular.
Innovation and Accessibility
The new carriages combine the charm of retro design with cutting-edge technology, providing a ride that blends history and innovation without compromising on safety. They are also fully accessible to people with reduced mobility, thanks to modernization work carried out at the stations by our technicians and engineers to comply with the Disability Act (BehiG). These efforts, which include the removal of architectural barriers, are nearing completion, enabling direct access to the carriages for wheelchair users.
The new carriage configuration also facilitates the transport of mountain bikes, meeting the needs of sports enthusiasts.
